From the Founder

Tend the Soil Publishing was created from a conviction Mellanie T. Grier could not shake: meaningful work deserves to be developed with care.

The name Tend the Soil was not chosen lightly. Long before this publishing house existed, gardening became one of Mellanie’s most meaningful pastimes — second only to fishing. What began as a simple way to slow down became a living lesson in patience, stewardship, preparation, and trust.

Gardening taught her that growth cannot be rushed. Healthy fruit depends on work that often happens beneath the surface first. Soil must be tended intentionally — watered, protected, amended, and given time — if anything lasting is going to grow.

Fishing taught her something similar. Stillness matters. Discernment matters. Waiting matters. Some things cannot be forced into your hands before their time.

Those lessons shaped the heart behind Tend the Soil Publishing.

As a mother, homeschool educator, writer, and publishing founder, Mellanie has seen how easily meaningful messages can become rushed, watered down, overlooked, or buried under the pressure to produce quickly. She has also seen how many people carry stories, wisdom, testimony, creativity, and practical knowledge they do not yet know how to shape into a book.

Tend the Soil Publishing was not created only as a home for Mellanie’s own books. It was also created to make room for other authors — especially those who have carried a message for years but have felt limited, overlooked, intimidated, or denied by larger publishing systems.

Mellanie believes that God has placed a book in many people: a testimony, a lesson, a memory, a recipe collection, a devotional, a family story, a children’s message, or hard-earned wisdom that deserves to be preserved and shared. Some authors know exactly what they want to say. Others only know they are carrying something meaningful and need help bringing the words forward.

That belief became part of the foundation for Tend the Soil Publishing: a place where thoughtful work can be cultivated with patience, clarity, and care.

Tend the Soil Publishing exists to steward books with purpose, whether that work is a children’s book, devotional, testimony, cookbook, family resource, memoir, workbook, guide, or legacy project. Some books are deeply scriptural. Some are practical. Some are personal. Some are created for families, churches, classrooms, kitchens, or quiet moments of reflection.

What matters is that the work has roots.

A book should have a reason to exist beyond being published. It should serve the reader. It should honor the author’s voice. It should be shaped with patience, clarity, and care.

This is the kind of publishing house Mellanie set out to build:

One that honors the slow work.

The rooted work.

The honest work.

The work that may not always be loud, but has the potential to last.

Not careless volume.

Not trend-chasing.

Not books pushed into the world before they are ready.

Tend the soil well — and the fruit will always follow.
